Kentucky is one of 19 states named as finalists in the federal Race To The Top program.  The 19 finalists were culled from 35 states that submitted bold blueprints for education reform.  Not all of the finalists will receive grants from the nearly three-point-four-billion dollars in the Race To the Top fund.
 
The Warren County "Back to School Bash" is back on thanks to the Bowling Green Noon Rotary Club; who donated five-thousand-dollars to the Warren County School District to serve 700 kids needing school supplies. The Bash serves students from Rockfield, Lost River, and Warren Elementaries, Moss Middle School, and Warren Central High School. The Back to School Bash is set to take place on Saturday August 7th 9 A.M.-Noon at Warren Central High School.
 
The city of Franklin is searching for a new City Manager; after Jim Brown, stepped down during Monday night's City Commission meeting, less than a year into his term. The Commission won't comment on why Brown resigned only saying that Mr. Brown wanted to pursue other interests.
Finance Director Cendy Dodd will be the "interim" City Manager until Brown's replacement is found.
 
Some say better late than never…some of the beaches and campgrounds at Barren River Lake, are back to normal operation after months of closure due to high water from unusually heavy spring rains. All Barren River Lake facilities are now open, except Barren River Lake State Resort Park Beach, which remains closed until further notice, and the boat ramp at Port Oliver, which remains closed due to ongoing construction.
 
The funeral arrangements are no complete for 15 yr old St Jude patient Robert Cunningham of Butler Co. Visitation is from 11am-9pm tomorrow and his funeral is set for Friday 2p at Smith funeral home of Morgantown. His family asked for those attending to dress casual and wear something blue; to support Robert’s love of UK basketball, The Indianapolis Colts and Butler Co. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to St Jude Children’s Hospital, Butler Co cancer assistance, Hospice of Soky or caring bridge.
 
SPORTS: The Mets crushed Adam Wainwright and the Cardinals 8-2 yesterday. 
The Nationals blanked the Braves 3-0 in DC.

---Roush racing co-owner Jack Roush was hospitalized last night following a plane crash in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.  He was landing his Hawker Beechcraft jet when the crash took place.  This is the second plane crash for Roush, who is in serious, but stable condition.
---Terrell Owens' next NFL stop will be in the Queen City.  The Bengals have agreed to a one-year, $2-million deal with the 36-year-old.  "T.O." is expected to be at camp on Thursday.
---Current WKU director of basketball operations and former Hilltopper basketball standout Anthony Winchester is leaving WKU to take a high school head coaching job at Scottsburg High School in Indiana. Winchester starred as a player at Western from 2003-06, earning the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year award in 2006.

Tony Hayward is stepping down as CEO of BP. He will be replaced by American BP executive Robert Dudley. The company made the announcement just early this morning while reporting a net loss of 17-point-two-billion dollars in the second quarter due to the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
 
A tuition hike for the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, Kentucky State University, and Western Kentucky University has been approved. Students at Kentucky State and Western will see tuition rise five percent while students at Kentucky Tech will pay an additional four percent.
 
Franklin Police say Stacie Leigh Duke posted a $10,000 cash bond yesterday; she is accused of taking more than $22,000 dollars when she worked as a bookkeeper in the Simpson Circuit Court Clerk's office.
 
A Barren County man is dead after being thrown off his motorcycle. 48 year old Trandall Borders lost control of his bike, was thrown and received critical injuries. He was air lifted from the scene and pronounced dead at a local hospital. Borders was not wearing a helmet.
 
A father entered a plea of not guilty yesterday after he was accused of beating his son over a game of hopscotch.  46-year-old Christopher Robison is accused of severely bruising his five-year-old son after hitting him with a belt. Robison told authorities he took the disciplinary action after his son kept "lipping off" -his preliminary hearing is set for August 2nd.
 
Sad news to report; 15 yr old Robert Cunningham of Butler County lost his fight with cancer last night. Robert was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2007 at was treated at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. His sister, Emily, donated the bone marrow that eventually put him into remission.
Robert relapsed last year, returned to St. Jude and was preparing for a second bone marrow transplant when doctors discovered his heart was too weak to withstand the chemo.
Robert fought his battle until the end; Our condolences go out to his brave family.
 
Because enough fans enjoyed the HullabaLOU Music Festival at Churchill Downs, the event will probably come back.  Churchill Downs Entertainment reports over 78-thousand people attended the inaugural event and fans said they had a great experience. The three-day music festival featured over 65 artists and wrapped up Sunday. 
 
SPORTS: Matt Garza fired the first no-hitter in Rays history as Tampa Bay topped Detroit 5-0 at Tropicana Field.

---The Hot Rods fell to the Cedar Rapids Kernels 6-0 last night; The Hot Rods now hit the road after an off-day today and then open a three-game series in Dayton, OH, with the Dragons.
---The Tennessee Titans have filed suit against the University of Southern California and head football coach Lane Kiffin.  The Titans claim Kiffin "maliciously" interfered with a contract in place after USC named running backs coach Kennedy Pola as its offensive coordinator on Saturday.

Tony Hayward's tenure as BP's CEO may come to an end very soon.  BP's board of directors is meeting today to decide who will direct the company following the massive oil spill.  American BP executive Bob Dudley is a likely replacement.
 
Former Wildcat basketball star Ed Davender will not be sentenced until late next month on charges involved in a ticket scam.  Davender had pleaded guilty to 19 charges out of Fayette County.  The former UK player had been taking money for basketball tickets he didn't deliver and didn't have possession of.  He is also facing more charges involved with a similar ticket scam for the 2010 Final Four.
 
Six Flags and the Kentucky State Fair board have reached a deal in which the amusement park company would surrender its stake in Kentucky Kingdom. The deal requires the fair board to forgive almost three million dollars in lease-related payments owed by Six Flags and for the state to accept Six Flags release of its property rights in lieu of two point $5 million in back taxes. A Louisville businessman has plans to run the amusement park and hopes to have it open by next summer.
 
With new schools opening soon and new students coming aboard, officials are re-routing transportation plans. In Warren County, transportation officials have re-routed bus stops, particularly in the Warren Central, Greenwood and South Warren areas. Warren County schools operate 185 buses and transport about 8,000 students. Warren County buses travel an average of 13,350 miles a day. For Bowling Green Independent Schools, some routes will switch, but some of those changes still must be worked out. Parents are encouraged to attend the schools’ open houses, where some bus drivers will be on hand with re-routing information. They also can contact the transportation office or their child’s school to get an estimated bus stop time. The city has 38 buses and runs about 30 routes.
 
SPORTS: Felipe Lopez hit a solo homer in the top of the 11th inning to lift the Cardinals to a 4-3 win over the Cubs last night at Wrigley.  St. Louis moves a half-game ahead of the Reds atop the NL Central.

---Ryan Wiegand picked up his 16th double along with an RBI on Sunday afternoon, but the Hot Rods couldn't string together enough hits in a 7-2 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Bowling Green Ballpark. The loss evens the series at one game each heading into the finale tonight first pitch is 7:05 PM.
---Andre Dawson was enshrined into the Baseball Hall of Fame yesterday; Former manager Whitey Herzog and umpire Doug Harvey were also enshrined.
---Jamie McMurray took the checkered flag at the Brickyard 400 at Indy yesterday. He took the lead from Kevin Harvick after the final restart with 11 laps left and became the third driver to win the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400 in the same season.  Greg Biffle finished in third place.
---At the World Games basketball tournament for the Special Olympics, Kentucky's team took home gold medals. The Bowling Green-based basketball team representing team Kentucky held off Minnesota 19 to 16 to win the gold medal at the 2010 Special Olympics USA National Games in Nebraska. The team adds a national games gold medal to the gold it won at the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in China.
